Punchi Baba was the debut film of Malani. When director Sugathapala Marasinghe and Joe Abeywickrama inquired Malini how much she needs as her payment she has said that she does not expect any money out of acting but she does acting only for fun. She was paid Rs 1,250/- as her first pay which was an enormous amount of money during this time.
